CSIR NET June 2024: Latest Notification Out – Major Changes

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has recently released the official notification for the National Eligibility Test (NET) for June 2024. This examination is a pivotal step for those looking to carve a niche in the realm of scientific research and academia in India. 

National Testing Agency (NTA) will be conducting the Joint CSIR-UGC NET Examination June-2024, which is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘award of Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as Assistant Professor’, ‘appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ and ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ in Indian universities and colleges through Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

Eligibility Criteria

The CSIR NET sets specific academic prerequisites that candidates must meet to appear for the exam:

Educational Qualification

– Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Science streams, including Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences with General/ General EWS – 55% and SC/ ST/ PwD/ Third Gender – 50%

– Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree or equivalent course or candidates who have appeared for their qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for NET.

– The candidates having passed a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC (non-creamy layer)/ Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time. 

The candidates qualifying in the NET, based on a four-year undergraduate degree, will be eligible for the award of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for admission to the Ph.D. The candidates qualifying in the NET, based on a four-year undergraduate degree, will not be eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor. 

– The candidates who are pursuing a Four Year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme and are in their last semester/year may also apply for the test.

– The candidates with a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programme are allowed to appear in a subject in which they want to pursue a Ph.D. irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor’s degree.

Age Limit

For JRF (Junior Research Fellowship), the upper age limit has been increased to 30 years as of June 1, 2024. There is no upper age limit for the Lectureship (LS) / Assistant Professor roles or Admission for PhD. A relaxation of up to 5 years is provided to the candidates belonging to OBC-NCL /SC/ST/PwD/Third gender categories and to women applicants.  

Format of the Examination

The Joint CSIR NET June 2024 will continue with its traditional pattern:

Paper Structure: The question paper is divided into three parts (A, B, C), which test General Aptitude and Subject-Specific Knowledge.

Duration: The exam will be conducted for 180 Minutes (3 hours) without any break.

Application Process: The application for CSIR NET June 2024 must be submitted online through the official CSIR HRDG website. Payment of the application fee is required to complete the process, which can be done through various online modes available.
